The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself

By Michael A Singer

The Untethered Soul is all about you: your feelings, thoughts and consciousness. By drawing on different spiritual practices, this book explains how you can navigate your own mind, get in touch with yourself and become your own master, to ultimately achieve enlightenment.

I like this book because Michael Singer uses very simple and down to earth examples that almost everyone has experienced sometime in their lives to explain his concepts.

Tao of Pooh and the Te of Piglet, The_ The principles of Taoism demonstrated by Winnie-the-Pooh and Piglet.png

The Tao of Pooh and The Te of Piglet

By Benjamin Hoff

In the Tao of Pooh, Benjamin Hoff reveals how the simple-minded character of Winnie the Pooh perfectly emulates the teachings of the ancient Chinese philosophy of Taoism. Taoist principles revolve around simply living as you are and following the natural power of the universe to find wisdom and happiness. While all the other creatures living in Pooh’s world get into all sorts of antics by overthinking or overacting, Pooh simply meanders as he is without question. The Way of Pooh is the Way of Taoism.

In The Te of Piglet, the Piglet character of the Winnie-the-Pooh books explains the Chinese concept of Te, meaning power or virtue. Hoff elucidates the Taoist concept of Virtue of the small; though, he also uses it as an opportunity to elaborate on his introduction to Taoism. The book goes through the other characters Tigger, Owl, Rabbit, Eeyore and Pooh to show the various aspects of humanity that Taoism says get in the way of living in harmony with the Tao.

These books are quick fun reads and really explain the concept of Taoism. It’s lessons are very relevant to what is happening in this world today.

The Power of Now: A Guide To Spiritual Enlightenment

By Eckhart Tolle

The Power of Now proposes that the only way to reach true peace and fulfillment is through being completely present in each moment you experience. There is a part of our mind, called the ego, that derails us by ruminating on the past, speculating about the future, clinging to our painful experiences, and insisting that we will be happy and fulfilled if we can just achieve this goal.

The Power of Now reveals that inner peace and happiness can’t be found in anything external, but rather must be found within by being present. Learn tips and methods for quieting your thoughts and fears to find fulfillment through presence.

I read this book back in 2014 and really did not get his concept about “Being”. I read it this past year and see it from a different state of consciousness. This second reading helped me to see that I have transformed.

Light on Life: The Yoga Journey to Wholeness, Inner Peace, and Ultimate Freedom

By B.K.S. Iyengar

In Light on Life, B.K.S. Iyengar brings readers this new and more complete understanding of the yogic journey. He explores the yogic goal to integrate the different parts of the Self (body, emotions, mind, and soul), the role that the yoga postures and breathing techniques play in our search for wholeness, the external and internal obstacles that keep us from progressing along the path, and how yoga can transform our lives and help us to live in harmony with the world around us. For the first time, Iyengar uses stories from his own life, humor, and examples from modern culture to illustrate the profound gifts that yoga offers.

If you are interested in how a yoga practice can help you become more aware of yourself, this book is for you. That is what I got out of this book.

Radical Acceptance: Awakening the Love That Heals Fear and Shame

By Tara Brach

In Radical Acceptance, Tara Brach explores in depth how Buddhist teachings can transform our fear and shame. Through meditation, mindfulness practices and fully understanding the healing power of compassion, we can discover the very real possibility of meeting imperfection in ourselves and others with courage and love and so transform our lives.

Part of the practice of Radical Acceptance is knowing that,  whatever arises,  whatever we can’t embrace with love, imprisons us no matter what it is. If we are at war with it, we stay in prison. It is for the freedom and healing of our own hearts, that we learn to recognize and allow our inner life.

This book is a fast read and gave me insight in accepting myself in a compassionate way. Tara shares her process of working with clients that I admire greatly and I hope to incorporate her style into my own work.

Becoming Supernatural _ How Common People Are Doing the Uncommon (Paperback).jpg

Becoming Supernatural: How Common People Are Doing the Uncommon

By Dr. Joe Dispenza

Harnessing scientific research and drawing from ancient wisdom, Becoming Supernatural (2017) explains how the average person can free themselves from self imposed limitations and transcend their lives. The author, Dr. Joe Dispenza is a doctor and educator specializing in the fields of neuroscience, epigenetics and quantum physics.

This book explains how kundalini yoga works from a scientific perspective. Dr. DIspenza does a great job explaining the physiology and quantum physics aspects of how energy flows through the body when kundalini yoga techniques are employed. Be aware there is a lot of promotional aspects to this book related to his seminars that make it appear unauthentic but I have practiced his techniques in kundalini yoga classes and they do work. I recommend this book for the scientific explanations.
